With the recent advent of high deductibles, coinsurance, and the like, many standard policies have effectively become catastrophic policies--great if you have lots of expensive medical issues but not so good for anything else. And companies like Aetna are counting on high deductibles/coinsurance to keep most of us from visiting a doctor until things become so bad that we absolutely have to. At the same time, they're keeping deductibles just below the IRS HDHP limit to qualify for an HSA. Health insurers don't want you to have an HSA because it would encourage you to actually use the health insurance your premiums pay for. Fewer patients and fewer tests mean that medical practitioners are also getting squeezed, although I have yet to see any unemployed MDs hanging out at the Occupy Wall Street protests.
