Indirect inguinal hernias are congenital and occur because of a weakness in the developing abdominal wall that causes fat or part of the small intestine to slide through the opening, creating a bulge in the lower abdomen.

    Direct hernias only occur in men and are essentially the same thing – that is, there is a weakness in the connective tissue of the abdominal muscles allowing fat or part of the small intestine to extrude. They are easily recognizable as a bulge that may be more pronounced with coughing or any activity that puts pressure on the abdominal muscles.

    Hernias slide in and out of the opening in the abdominal wall but occasionally, they remain outside the abdominal wall. Hernias that slide in and out are called “reducible” hernias.

    Hernias are surgically repaired by gently pushing the hernia back behind the abdominal muscles and reinforcing the area with mesh. The following video shows what’s involved in this procedure.

Spinal tap? This video shows both procedures. The doctor doing the procedure refers to his patients as “honey” which I find very unprofessional. If you can get by that, the procedure itself is interesting. As an aside, I’ve had male patients refer to me as “honey” and “sweetie” – I tell them right up front that they can call me by my first name – but not by any terms of endearment.
