What’s the Difference Between Warts and Herpes?

Submitted by admin on Monday, August 9 2010No Comment

This question was raised by many readers of the NY Times health section and Dr. Peter Leone, associate professor at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and Public Health, wrote a brief but concise response that outlines the difference between genital warts and genital herpes. This should clear up any confusion the reader may have.

Given that certain subtypes of the human papilloma virus are known to cause cervical cancer, the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommend one of two types of vaccines currently on the market to protect against the human papilloma virus (HPV) which is responsible for certain types of cervical cancer and genital warts.  The vaccines are Cirvarex, the bivalent HPV vaccine (protects against 2 types of cancer-causing genital cancers) and Gardasil, the quadrivalent HPV vaccine which protects against 4 HPV viruses – the two that cause cervical cancer and two others that cause genital warts.

For more information about herpes, the CDC provides a very readable fact sheet that is worth having a look at.
