Sciatica: Why It Occurs

Anyone who has had sciatica knows how terribly painful this nerve problem is. I liken it to a severe, chronic toothache. Pain medication, even narcotics, does little to dull the pain. This inflammation of the nerve often spontaneously resolves – but it can take weeks for that to happen. I usually prescribe a dose pack of prednisone along with pain medication and rest. Physical therapy is sometimes helpful. Surgical consultation is needed for those whose pain continues beyond several months.
