Palliative Sedation: A Sleep-induced, Painfree Death

Dying patientIf you had a choice between dying an agitated, painful death or dying while being sedated to stop the agitation and pain, which would you prefer? I’ve worked in the nursing home setting for many years and although we would like to assure people that death can be quiet and peaceful, that’s not always the case.

This article on palliative sedation (some refer to it as “terminal sedation”), “Months to Live: Hard Choice for a Comfortable Death- Sedation“ thoughtfully explores the concerns medical practitioners and families face when confronting end-of-life issues when dying is not likely to be peaceful or easy.
