Schatzki's Ring: What It Is and How It's Treated
Schatzki’s ring is an abnormal narrowing of the esophagus that occurs in the lower esophagus where it meets the stomach. The cause of this narrowing is not thought to be congenital.
Treatment involves dilatation of the constricted area with a large caliber balloon, but this treatment is not permanent and recurrence is common after 5 years.
The chief symptom is a feeling of food getting stuck in the throat. Once treated with dilatation, it is generally recommended that medications to suppress acid be given as this may help to decrease the frequency of recurrence.
