Average Saliva Production and Dry Mouth
On average, we produce 1.5 liters of saliva a day – the equivalent of 2 bottles of wine! Anything less than 0.1ml/hr constitutes dry mouth – a seemingly benign problem that can lead to dental caries, problems with swallowing and chewing, and cause infections.
Many medications cause a decrease in saliva production due to their anticholinergic effects. These medications include antidepressants, antihistamines, decongestants, and medications used to treat urinary incontinence, to name a few.
So if dry mouth is a problem for you, ask your provider to review your medication list with you to see if one or a combination of drugs are the culprit.
