Research Shows High Bacteria Counts in Showerheads
A new study conducted by the University of Colorado showed that high bacterial counts of Mycobacterium avium reside in shower heads. The lead author of the study, Norman Pace, distinguished professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology is interested in the larger question of how the microbiology of the indoor environment may contribute to illness.
The study showed that plastic showerheads harboured higher bacterial counts than metal showerheads. Whether or not this contributes to poorer health outcomes from those who suffer from respiratory diseases is not known.
The bottom line: clean your showerhead if it looks dirty. It may also help to run the shower before entering in order to flush out the bacteria. Follow this link for more information about this study published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.
