The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has launched trials of the new H1N1 flu vaccine in pregnant women. According to data collected during the first month of the H1N1 flu outbreak, the rate of hospitalization among pregnant women was 4x  higher than in the general population.

Up to 120 women between 18 and 39 years of age who are in their 2nd or 3rd trimester of pregnancy will receive 2 doses of the new H1N1 flu vaccine, the second dose occurring 21 days after the first. The strength of the dose will be either 15 mcg or 30 mcg.

Samples of cord blood will be taken to measure the degree of immunity conferred on the unborn fetus. The trials will take place in 6 major medical centers across the country.
