New Risk Factors for Melanoma

Submitted by admin on Monday, June 8 2009No Comment

At the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology this year in March, six risk factors for developing melanoma were released. Each of these risk factors are independent predictors of this deadly skin cancer. Although some have already been known, they serve as quick screening tool for providers.

The 6 risk factors are:

  1. History of blistering sunburns as a teen
  2. Red or blond hair
  3. Marked freckling of the upper back
  4. Family history of melanoma
  5. History of actinic keratoses
  6. Outdoor summer jobs for 3 or more years as a teen
Sunscreen alone won’t protect you. Remember to cover up and when you apply sunscreen, don’t forget the tops of your ears and the back of your neck.
