Restaurant Calorie Counts Misleading: Shame on U(NO)

Submitted by admin on Monday, April 20 2009No Comment

As the Nutrition Action Healthletter exposed in this month’s issue, UNO’s Cabot Aged Cheddar & Sauteed Mushroom Burger reads in at 600 calories, 16 grams of saturated fat and 910 mgs of sodium. Diners beware however: the calorie label only applies to HALF the burger!

This misleading practice by UNO relies on the consumer’s assumption that the meal s/he is choosing consists of one serving – why wouldn’t she, right? Although most of us are aware that we need to check the serving size on the nutritional label on boxed and canned products, who would think to do so on the meal they’re ordering at a restaurant?

So I went to UNO’s website, clicked on Nutrition, Dietary Category, Less than 500 calories, then Burgers and Sandwiches. Of the 5 items mentioned, not one was a single serve size – they were either 1.5 or 2 serves.

Thanks for the info from Nutrition Action Healthletter.

Shame on you UNO.
