Who Knew? Urinary Bladder Capacity
The bladder holds approximately 250-350 cc of urine and when it’s completely full, about 600 ccs (17 ounces or so). In extreme circumstances, it can hold more but this would generally cause much pain and discomfort.
When the urine volume hits around 250 cc, the increased volume increases the pressure inside the bladder tiggering stretch receptors lining the walls of the bladder.
These stretch receptors signal the brain to relax the internal sphincter, and stimulate the detrusor muscles that forms the base of the bladder to contract.
When we receive this urge to urinate, the external sphincter, which is under conscious control, now must work to prevent urination.
