Elemental Calcium: Why It Matters

Submitted by admin on Wednesday, February 18 2009No Comment

Calcium exists in nature in combination with other substances. We refer to these as calcium compounds. Each of these calcium compounds contain differing amounts of calcium. The actual amount of calcium in the supplement is called the “elemental calcium”.

For example, calcium carbonate contains 40% calcium and 60% carbonate. This means that if the pill weighs 1000 mg, the actual amount of calcium in the supplement is 400 mg. The other 600 mg is the weight of the carbonate. The dose of elemental calcium is listed on most supplements.

It is important to note what the actual amount of elemental calcium is in the supplement you are taking because that will determine how many doses or pills you need to take. You can read more about role of Vitamin D by following the links provided or searching this website.

If you have any questions about your calcium supplement, be sure to talk with your provider.
