Doubling of Vitamin D for Infants and Children

Submitted by admin on Wednesday, February 25 2009No Comment

The American Academy of Pediatrics has called for a doubling of its Vitamin D recommendations for infants, children and adolescents in an effort to curb rickets, a condition that causes bones to become soft and weak leading to stunting of growth and fractures.

Since babies who are breastfed exclusively are at higher risk for Vitamin D deficiency, the Academy recommends that Vitamin D supplementation of 400 IU begin in the first few days after birth. Vitamin D is important because without it, the body can’t absorb calcium. Food sources of this vitamin are limited which is why milk is often fortified with Vitamin D.

To find out more about the role of Vitamin D and the problems that occur with this deficiency, read, “Vitamin D – Changes in the Recommended Daily Allowance for Infants, Children and Teenagers”.
