Doubling of Vitamin D for Infants and Children
The American Academy of Pediatrics has called for a doubling of its Vitamin D recommendations for infants, children and adolescents in an effort to curb rickets, a condition that causes bones to become soft and weak leading to stunting of growth and fractures.
Since babies who are breastfed exclusively are at higher risk for Vitamin D deficiency, the Academy recommends that Vitamin D supplementation of 400 IU begin in the first few days after birth. Vitamin D is important because without it, the body can’t absorb calcium. Food sources of this vitamin are limited which is why milk is often fortified with Vitamin D.
