More Foods That Are Great For You!
What I love about lists are that they are succinct and (hopefully) informative so when I came across this article on Tara Parker-Pope’s blog, on the New York Times web page, entitled, “The 11 Best Foods You Aren’t Eating“, I couldn’t wait to see if the foods I like to eat were on the list.
Of the 11 foods, I buy about 3 of them but really, I’m cheating because one of them listed, beets, I rarely buy (even though I love them) because they stain so easily.
So here are the 11 foods as selected by nutritionist and author Jonny Bowden. To find out why these foods are so healthy, follow the previously listed link to the article.
- Beets
- Cabbage
- Swiss Chard
- Cinnamon
- Pomegranate juice
- Dried plums (yes, otherwise known as “prunes”)
- Pumpkin seeds
- Sardines (that will make my mother happy)
- Turmeric
- Frozen blueberries
- Canned Pumpkin
I suspect the last two are mentioned frozen or canned just because they can be used all year round packaged this way.
So feel good about yourself if you enjoy and consume these foods regularly!

The top two foods on the list go great together. Pre-cook the beets a little (leftovers work well) then saute with the shredded cabbage. A few spices (yup, cinnamon works well here too) and you’ve got a tasty and nutritious side dish. The leftover beets also make a great cold salad, mixed with some celeriac and spices, sometimes with plain (whole milk!) yogurt.
We keep a bag of frozen blueberries on hand always, to put on breakfast cereals straight from the freezer. And there are few lunches better than a well-prepared sardine sandwich, with cheese or good mustard (or both).
This is a good list for foods that can be mixed and matched endlessly without getting tired of them. Thanks for the tip!
