FDA Warns Against Internet Diet Pills
It’s that time of year when we eat our way through the holidays and then look for quick ways to shed those unwanted pounds. So it’s particularly timely that the FDA tested weight loss pills sold over the internet and marketed as dietary supplements, and discovered 28 of them which can cause serious health problems such as heart attack, stroke, rapid heart rate, palpatations, and seizures.
“These tainted weight loss products pose a great risk to public health because they contain undeclared ingredients and, in some cases, contain prescription drugs in amounts that greatly exceed their maximum recommended dosages,” said Janet Woodcock, M.D., director, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, FDA. “Consumers have no way of knowing that these products contain powerful drugs that could cause serious health consequences. Therefore FDA is taking this action to protect the health of the American public.”
The FDA analysis found that many of these drugs contained one of these four ingredients: sibutramine (a controlled substance), rimonabant (a drug not approved for marketing in the United States), phenytoin (an anti-seizure medication), and phenolphthalein (a solution used in chemical experiments and a suspected cancer causing agent). Often the amount of active ingredient far exceeded the FDA recommended dose.
Many of these products come from China and as we’ve seen over recent years, oversight in the manufacturing and standardization of supplements is sorely lacking. Because they are sold as supplements, many of these products escape scrutiny.
Here are a list of the products to avoid:

Remember, just because product labeling says it’s “natural” or “herbal” doesn’t mean it’s safe. As any herbalist or naturalist worth his or her salt will tell you, plant-based medicines kill just as easily as cure. Don’t be fooled into thinking natural = safe. Any food supplement or weight loss pill that promises easy weight loss is either lying or dangerous.
