Who Knew? Smelly Feet and Damp Hands

Submitted by admin on Wednesday, October 22 2008No Comment

The average person has between 2 and 4 million sweat glands. Of these glands, there are approximataely 3,000 sweat glands per square inch on the feet and hands – more than under the arms. Men tend to produce more sweat than women even though women have more sweat glands. That’s why feet and hands sweat a lot.

However, perspiration itself doesn’t smell. Bacteria that resides on the skin interacts with the perspiration causing the odor. Because hands are exposed to air, the sweat quickly evaporates and there is no odor. FeetĀ  smell because the bacteria multiplies in the warm, dark environment of a shoe. More bacteria, more smell.
