A red blood cell (RBC) lives for about 120 days before the plasma membrane becomes fragile and non-functional. Since the average male has about 5.4 million red blood cells per cubic millimeter of blood, the body must produce about 2 million new red blood cells a second. Yes, 2 million a second! The question is how many cubic millimeters of blood is there in the body?
