Why Are Asians Less Likely to Become Alcoholics?

The liver produces several enzymes that breakdown alcohol. The primary enzyme, alcohol dehydrogenase,  converts alcohol into acetaldehyde, a highly toxic substance in the body. The second enzyme, aldehyde dehydrogenase converts acetaldehyde into a relatively harmless substance. Interestingly, about 50% of Asians lack this second enzyme. As a result, when acetaldehyde builds up in the body, it causes facial flushing, rapid heart rate, nausea and vomiting. Because these symptoms occur pretty quickly after drinking and are so unpleasant, alcoholic consumption is reduced in Asians. Less consumption, fewer alcoholics!
