LEDs Reduce Wrinkles

Submitted by admin on Wednesday, October 29 2008One Comment

Live long enough and the most amazing treatments will eventually be discovered and so it is with treating wrinkles. An article in the October 25th 2008 issue of New Scientist reviews the findings of two researchers at the University of Ulm in Germany. LEDs (light emitting diodes), those indicator lights on your electronic gadgets, have been found to alter the interactions between the elastin in your skin and water molecules.

Most of you know that when skin loses its elasticity, it sags and then wrinkles occur. This happens because elastin, the protein that gives your skin its elasticity, builds up with fatty acids and other deposits causing the water molecules that surround the elastin to become more glue-like and stick to the surrounding tissue.

Red LED light (not blue or green light) however can make these water molecules less sticky. To test this, powerful red LEDs were aimed at the crow’s feet around the edges of the eyes. After 10 months of daily treatment for 90 seconds, wrinkles actually decreased.

I can see it now – something for all budgets: cute little designer glasses or cheap over-the-counter ones that we could wear anytime with little red LED lights aimed right at those crow’s feet. Beats botox!
