Who Knew? Why Bones Leach Calcium

When the body detects an insufficient quantity of calcium, it seeks to correct this imbalance by stimulating bones to release its store of calcium. Why? Because calcium is fundamental to maintaining, among other things, nerve impulses and muscle contractions (including the contractions of your heart).


What is the best calcium source for a middle-ager with no particular signs of bone density problems? Is there enough in milk in coffee, or are supplements needed at this age? Second, if someone does have the beginnings of bone loss, which is the best supplement short of a prescription?

Thanks for your question. The short answer is calcium carbonate, 500 mg 2-3 times a day is fine to take as long as you’re not on any antacids or taking any pills that neutralize the acid in your stomach – like Pepcid, Prilosec etc. If you are one of these types of meds, then take calcium citrate.
